A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
